I had once heard that more ice cream is sold in the winter than in the summer. Not sure that this is true, but it makes sense when you think of all the time we spend inside, in front of the TV and eating in the winter. Well, since today started at negative 17, it must be a perfect time to eat ice cream.
My boys are just dying to get outside and play in 15 inches of new snow we got over the weekend, but with these nasty temps, I can only last about 5 minutes. They on the other hand seem to be able to last all day out there digging and playing (remember those days). To compromise, I bring the snow in. We play with the snow in mixing bowls or the sink.
Other good way to bring the snow in is to make ice cream. Here is how:
- 1 pint zip-type plastic bag
- 1 quart zip-type plastic bag
- 1/2 cup rock, sea or kosher salt (the bigger the crystal the better)
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1 tbs sugar
- 1/4 tsp vanilla
Put the milk, vanilla and sugar into the small bag and seal. Fill the large bag half full of ice or snow. Add the salt to the snow. Put the small bag into the large bag. Seal the large bag. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, about 5 minutes.
You can wrap a towel around the bags to keep your hands warm, or wear your mittens. We like dancing to music and try shaking the bag above our heads then down at our feet. You can also make chocolate ice cream by using chocolate milk and eliminating the sugar.
Enjoy and stay warm. It is suppose to be 17 degrees (positive) tomorrow. That is will be 34 degrees warmer than today. Yipee, a heat wave.
